For the first time, the Great Australian Pub Fishing Competition is set to lure a cast of hundreds – if not thousands – of social anglers to Newcastle NSW for an ‘un-reel’ weekend of fishing and fun.

Rules are pretty simple, No.1 being that anglers must be members of (or represent) their local pub or licenced club’s social fishing group. With more than 17,000 watering holes scattered across the country, and lots more across the Tasman, they’ll potentially be coming from far and wide.

It’s not designed for those with million-dollar gameboats who chase marlin and sailfish, but rather the typical, fun-loving angler who enjoys tackle shops and talking fishing as much as a quiet beer.

As with golf’s Volkswagen Scramble, you can travel as a team of up to four and compete for national trophies, prizes and bragging rights against other pub/club teams. Pubs can have more than one team.

Mates against mates, baits against baits!

Represent your local pub or licenced club

Iconic Aussie beer brand XXXX is a key event partner for the Great Australian Pub Fishing Competition and will promote the event through pubs and clubs, while also providing product. City of Newcastle is also a generous foundation supporter, while Australia’s premier marine publication, Club Marine Magazine, is our strategic editorial partner.

We’re expecting over 800 competitors for the inaugural event on October 14-16, 2022. Unfortunately, junior anglers (U/18) can’t participate.
